Tung wood board is a prime material in the timber industry, prized for its light weight, durability, and resistance to decay. Its applications, ranging from furniture to musical instruments, provide a sustainable choice over traditional hardwoods. Moreover, tung wood board's ability to coppice, or regenerate from its stump post-harvest, is a game-changer in forestry economics. This regrowth capacity ensures continuous forest cover without the need for replanting, significantly reducing the costs and labor typically associated with tree cultivation.
Advantages of Tung Wood Board
Strength and durability
Tung wood board timber is know for it's exceptional strength to weight ratio making it stronger and more durable than basswood. This means that tung wood board shutters are less likely to warp or bend over time making them a more long lasting investment.
01
Stability
Tung wood board timber has a low shrinkage rate which means it is less likely to crack or split over time. This makes it an ideal choice for shutters which need to withstand changes in temperature and humidity.
02
Lightweight
Tung wood board timber is one of the lightest hardwoods available, which means that it is easy to work with and install. This makes it an excellent choice for large shutters as it reduces the weight load on hinges and other hardware.
03
Eco- friendly
Tung wood board is a fast growing tree that can reach maturity in as little as 5 years, making it a highly sustainable resource. Additionally, the timber has a low carbon footprint due to it's fast growth and high carbon sequestration.
04
Cost
While the cost of tung wood board timber may vary depending on the region, it is generally less expensive than basswood, making it a more cost- effective option for plantation shutters.
05
Tung wood board is non-toxic, its characteristics and functions:
● There are many varieties and wide distribution, suitable for large-scale afforestation and greening.
● It grows fast, has a lot of volume, and solves the problem of insufficient wood supply.
● It is a deep-rooted tree species, suitable for large-scale interplanting of tung tree.
● It is one of the lightest woods, with an air-drying density of 0.23-0.40 g/cm3, which is about 40% lighter than ordinary wood.
● Tung wood board leaves and tung wood board flowers are rich in fertilizers and nutrients, and can be used as fertilizers and feeds. Tung wood board leaves can also attract and kill pests.
● Tung wood board leaves, flowers, fruits, and bark can be used to treat tracheitis and have significant effects.
● The tung wood board tree is beautiful, with gorgeous flowers and colors, and the leaves secrete liquid, which can purify the air for viewing and green chemical mining areas.
● Tung wood board is an indispensable instrument for making musical instruments. It can stabilize the sound regardless of the weather.
● Tongcai has a bright, graceful and delicate texture with silk silk, and its natural patterns are particularly good.
● Because of its small shrinkage coefficient, the tung wood board will not bend, warp, or deform.
● Moisture resistance and moisture barrier: The dried tung wood board is not easy to absorb moisture and moisture, and has a high degree of preservation.
● Although the tung wood board is light, it is not easy to wear. The tung wood board is used as a bellows, and the rod is rubbed back and forth, but the box board is not easy to wear.
Applications of Tung Wood Board
Furniture: Tung wood board is a popular choice for crafting high-quality furniture pieces due to its lightweight nature and attractive appearance. From intricate carvings to modern designs, it complements a wide range of furniture styles.
Interior decor: Its elegant look and ease of customization make it a favored material for interior décor elements like wall paneling, moldings, and ceilings, adding a touch of class to any space.
Boat building: Its lightweight and buoyant properties make tung wood board an excellent option for constructing boats and watercraft, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable sailing experience.
Musical instruments: The wood's excellent acoustic properties and sound-absorbing capabilities make it a preferred material for crafting musical instruments like guitars, ukuleles, and other stringed instruments.
Construction and renovation: From doors and windows to flooring and cabinetry, tung wood board finds applications in various aspects of construction and renovation projects, offering a perfect blend of strength and aesthetics.
Characteristic of Tung Wood Board
Tung wood board forms a light wood, with a delicate honey-yellow to light gray color. Its surface is characterized by a silky shine. The characteristic grain of the wood is particularly eye catching due to its broad annual growth rings.
The flash point of tung wood board is with 420 ° C about half time higher than that of ordinary forest woods (270 ° c). For the energy use as firewood such a high flashpoint plays only a minor role, but it makes the wood interesting for applications, where increased fire protection is required.
With an average weight of only 310 kg per cubic meter tung wood board forms one of the lightest woods in the world. In comparison, our native oak lies at about 580 kg per cubic meter and even our currently as lightweight known spruce gets still at 470 kg. In spite of this low density tung wood board offers a high stability, the wood is preferably used in areas in which priority is given to weight reduction. These include the shipbuilding, aircrafts and construction of mobile homes and caravans.
Due to its low density, the wood has a relatively soft surface. This can indeed be crafted very well, but also makes it prone to scratches and little damages. To gain the suitability for everyday use, such as a sufficiently hard surface, a finishing step and additional treatment is necessary.
Depending on how the wood is to be processed, it can be dried both on the fresh air and in drying chambers to quickly reduce the residual moisture content to about 10-12%. Another feature of tung wood board is in its small degree of remoisturization. Once tung wood board is dried, it hardly takes up water again. In contrast to other types of woods, tung wood board is therefore an extremely dimensionally stable timber. The typical "working processes" of the wood - known as swelling and shrinking - remain absent from here. In addition to the good sound properties of tung wood board this is one of the aspects decisive for the use of wood for various musical instruments.
Since water is the transport medium for odors and flavors, the tung wood board timber assumes no alien smells and tastes. Because it also has no smell on it's own, tung wood board is therefore also preferably used for production of packaging material in the food and beverage industry.
5 Tips for Taking Care of Tung Wood Board
Stack tung wood board horizontally
The best way to store your tung wood board is horizontally instead of vertically. Storing tung wood board flat let's it breathe better, which will help prevent bowing or other unwanted movement that results in waste when building.
If you don't have the space to store tung wood board horizontally, keep vertical tung wood board supported on both ends, and as close to upright as possible.
Keep tung wood board off the ground
Keeping tung wood board off the ground will help avoid a couple of potential disasters. Namely, water damage.
That way your tung wood board can be stored up high and avoid taking up precious working space.
Store tung wood board indoors
And away from direct sun. The last thing you want to do is let your precious tung wood board get sun-bleached or ruined by a rogue rainstorm. Plus some woods like purple heart and padauk lose their vibrancy from exposure to uv rays, putting a damper on their stunning color.
Use stickers between boards
Stickers (narrow hardwood strips) help support hardwood tung wood board while leaving space to let the tung wood board breathe. Poplar is a perfect choice to make your own stickers – it's cheap and it won't transfer color to the wood. Keep the stickers lined up vertically as you stack more rows of boards on top to keep the weight distribution going straight down.
Seal end grain
End grain is where moisture gets in and out of you boards. So seal it up to prevent splits and cracks. Just apply a thin coat of shellac, wax, polyurethane, thinned wood glue or paint on the end grain. That will keep it as stable as possible.
Tung wood board holds nails and screws well and does not require pilot holes to be drilled. In fact both yellow poplar and white pine have proven to split before tung wood board. Flat head screws can be driven flush with the surface. Plantation grown tung wood board is mostly knot free, making it very consistent. It can be peeled for veneer in 1/16 inch thickness and has even been sliced at 1/32 inch. Intricate patterns can be cut with a jig saw or band saw without splitting easily.
All normal finishing materials can be applied and it bonds well with glue. Stability air-drying takes as little as 30 days. Boards can be kiln-dried at high temperatures in as little as 24 hours to 10% to 12% moisture content with no warping. Reported shrinkage from green to oven-dry is only 2.2% radial and 4.0% tangential. Tung wood board remains stable during changes in humidity and experiences little shrinkage or expansion compared to most other woods. It is highly durable and resists decay under non-ground contact conditions. The wood is insect-resistant.

Tips for Drying Tung Wood Board
Allow air movement
When freshly cut, tung wood board stacked without air space around the logs can develop mold and mildew, resulting in stains or decay. So sawyers utilize a method called "stacking and stickering." this process creates an alternate stack of dry 1-in. X 1-in. "stickers" lengthwise every 16 inches or so between layers of wet tung wood board.
Each set of stickers is set above the previous layer, ensuring the tung wood board dries flat and smooth.
Use a moisture meter
Tung wood board from the lumberyard is usually kiln dried. But how dry is it? It depends on how it was stored, and for how long, before you bought it.
While most lumberyards dry tung wood board to eight to 10 percent moisture content (MC), tung wood board stored indoors tends to remain dry. Lumberyards with exterior storage can have lumber with a wider range of MC.
Air-drying
In general, air-drying tung wood board cut fresh from a tree takes one year for every inch of thickness before it's ready to mill for lumber.
Tung wood board cells are linear, like a bundle of straws, letting moisture out the ends before the moisture in the center transpires through the face or edge of a board. As the lumber dries, it also shrinks and often warps, cups or bows depending on what part of the tree the lumber comes from. And considerable twisting can happen around knots.
Seal the ends of wet tung wood board
Tung wood board loses its moisture most quickly out of the end of a board, so ends dry out, shrink and crack faster than the middle of the plank. Applying green tung wood board end sealer seals the end grain, making moisture transpire more slowly than if left un-sealed.
Chop ends to check for hidden cracks
End cracks occur on almost every piece of lumber, some worse than others. Sometimes cracks are visible and obvious, while others are imperceptible to the naked eye.
After tung wood board is dry and ready for joinery, there's a great trick to finding these invisible cracks. When processing the lumber to length, chop a one-inch block off the end of the board and gently drop it on the shop floor. If it breaks, there was a hidden crack! Repeat until the dropped piece doesn't break. Then measure and cut the other end of the board to appropriate length.
